(This is Page 2. Click here to go back to Page 1.)
AbiWord isn't really a "kids'" program, but it is very popular with children and teens.
AbiWord is a free, full-featured word processor licensed under the GPL. It has lots of nice features and is suitable for most any word processing task. It is available in many languages and is capable of many advanced word processing functions.
AbiWord is capable of working with MS Word documents as well as those written in Open Document Format. It also has a lot of "plug-ins," like dictionaries, spell-checkers, and grammar checkers for many different languages. AbiWord is easy enough for children to use, but powerful enough for business use. And it's free!
Tux Type is a fun game and a typing tutor that helps young children learn to type. The person playing has to find the correct key on the keyboard to allow the penguin, named "Tux," to catch falling fish before they go splat on the ground.
This game can be very addictive.
(Grown-ups: Tux Type is licensed under the GPL. The source code may be found here, but you don't need the source code to install Tux Type.)
Tux Paint is a simple and fun painting program for children. You can paint lines and shapes, insert words and other text, save, and print the pictures that you make. You can even make totally silly pictures, like this one!
(Grown-ups: Tux Paint is licensed under the GPL. The source code may be found here, but you don't need the source code to install Tux Paint.)
LeoCAD is a 3-D CAD program that uses bricks similar to those found in many toys (but they don't represent any particular brand). Currently it has a library of more than 1000 different pieces. A tutorial can be found here.
LeoCAD is released under the GPL. The source code may be found here. You do not need the source code to install LeoCAD.
